FAQs

If you have a question about Delos, you may well find the answer here!
But if not, feel free to get in touch here

Q: What do you publish?
A: We mainly publish visual art and poetry, as well as some prose and non-fiction writing. All our publications centre around arts, regardless of the medium. Being a queer-run publisher, we have a lot of titles that also centre LGBTQ+ voices and advocacy for equality.

Q: How do you pick artists for your zines?
A: Our Collective Zines (Such as We Resist, CV&L, & The New Avant-Garde) all select artists via free open calls that usually last a few months. Our other publications usually come from chatting with the artists and deciding to make something together.

Q: How do I know if your work is what you're looking for?
A: Our open calls will usually detail what work we are searching for, some are quite broad, while some aim for more specific themes. But ultimately, the best way to find out is to enter the open calls and see what happens from there!

Q: I've made a zine, will you publish it?
A: Maybe! Typically, we don't publish finished zines as-is, but prefer to work with either projects yet-to-be-zined or your early drafts of a publication. This lets us collaborate on the publication more and create something truly spectacular together. Click here to learn more about publishing with Delos.

Q: Do you only publish zines, or books too?
A: Sometimes the line between a zine and a book is blurry, so we tend to describe publications however works best in each case, but we're not in a position to make hardcovers or other more expensive publications at the moment.

Q: Do you only publish visual art?
A: In our collective zines we publish visual arts, musicians, poetry, prose, essays, and more! So far, our Artist Publications have all been visual arts based, but if we're approached by a writer to work on a publication together we'll consider it the same as any other, whether fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, essay, or something else entirely.

Q: Who are you?
A: Delos is run by Artemis Hatfield, a queer and transgender multidisciplinary artist from the UK. Her own work looks a lot at experiences of queerness, and can get very political, which has informed our publications "Carnations, Violets & Lavender: Queer Artist Zine" & "We Resist: Trans+ Artists Protest Prejudice & Celebrate Trans Lives".

Q: What are your aims?
A: We strongly believe artwork should be accessible for both the artist and the viewer, art should be for everyone. And we think zine publishing is a great way to make this happen. Activism and advocacy for marginalised groups is also central to what we do. As Delos Publishing is run by Artemis Hatfield - a queer & trans person - LGBTQ+ advocacy comes up a lot in our publications.

Q: What's your stance on AI?
A: We don't use AI in any of our work, and our open call terms and conditions state that AI generated work will not be considered for our publications. We also state that no part of our publications may be used in training artificial intelligence technologies or systems, in accordance with Article 4(3) of the DSM Directive 2019/790.

Q: Why are you called Delos?
A: When Artemis started Delos in 2023 (At the time solely to publish CV&L) they were struggling for a name, and so looked to the same place she found her own name, Ancient Greek Mythology. Delos is the island on which (in most accounts) the goddess Artemis was born alongside her twin brother. Our logo is a depiction of an Ionic Column; while many columns on Delos have crumbled over the years and many which remain are in the Doric style, there is at least one surviving Ionic Column on Delos in the 'House of the Lake'.
